Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a flowering plant that originated in China. It has since been cultivated in several regions worldwide with high demand for the plant as a result of its powerful beneficial properties. Ginger has been used as an ingredient in foods and beverages, providing so many nutritional benefits. In addition, due to its health benefits, ginger is a traditional herb frequently used as a natural source of medicine. 

Nutritional Benefits & Medicinal Uses

The rhizome, commonly known as ginger or ginger root, is the component of the plant that is frequently used as a spice. Gingerol, a key part of ginger, is the main bioactive compound in the plant which provides countless medicinal benefits due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The combination of ginger root and gingerol counterparts aid in combating many illnesses and health related issues.  As an anti-inflammatory, ginger helps to overall improve one’s immune system. Ginger reduces inflammation within one’s colon, helping with digestive issues and relieving gas or bloat. Ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties also help to mediate soreness muscle pain caused from exercise. Joint pain is another common health issue in which ginger can be consumed or applied topically to alleviate the pain. Ginger has also been sought for as an effective remedy for fighting a cold or the flu and reducing feelings of nausea. 

Ways to Use Ginger

There are several ways to use ginger ingredients in order to experience the plant’s health benefits. This includes:

  1. Tea - Ginger makes for a great healing tea. Just cut a slice of fresh ginger, place in a mug, and pour some hot water in. You can add honey or lemon too. This will help to relieve nausea and calm an upset stomach. 

  2. Coffee - Adding ground ginger to your coffee will not only make it taste delicious, but will also help with digestion issues. 

  3. Cooking - Ginger spices are used in cooking to add delicious flavor while providing nutrients like magnesium, Vitamin C, potassium, and iron, in addition to providing several healing benefits such as aiding digestion, reducing inflammation, and decreasing nausea.  

  4. Aromatherapy - Using ginger essential oil for aromatherapy purposes can add a fresh aroma while helping to relieve nausea, reducing dizziness, and creating a soothing effect. 

  5. Topically - When ginger oil is used topically, the ginger eliminates bacteria and soothes redness.
